Primary Duties

Under the direction of the City Engineer and/or the Assistant City Engineer, the Engineering Tech I position is the first in three tiered career ladder encompassing a range of duties including computerized drafting, surveying, site inspections, maintaining engineering records, processing and issuing permits, updating standard plans and specifications, and supporting professional engineering, inspection and administrative staff. The Engineering Tech represents a broadly defined classification where incumbents may specialize in field work, surveying, site inspection, computerized drafting, construction permitting, development projects, or serve as a generalist. The Technician I concentrates on maps and drawings and gathering supporting information from the field, providing technical information to the public related to public works infrastructure, public works construction permitting services, and support services to other engineering, administrative, and public works staff.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

JOB STANDARDS/SKILLS

• Associate’s degree in Survey, drafting or Civil Engineering

• One to two years of experience responsible experience in the field of surveying and CAD preferred. Experience in the field of Civil Engineering, construction, or related field is a plus. Must have a valid Nebraska Driver’s license.

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering design, drafting, construction, operations, and surveying.

• Knowledge of and ability to operate a computer or other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications including Google Earth, Outlook, and Microsoft office 360; or appropriate to the assigned tasks.

• Knowledge of AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bluebeam, and ArcGIS

• Ability to learn and adapt to advances in computer and electronics device technology and • software.

• Ability to interpret construction plans and specifications, land descriptions, and survey documents.

• Knowledge of various construction methods and procedures, along; along with permitting and monitoring requirements.

• Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations,

• Ability to establish and efficiently maintain precise records regarding locations, inspections, observations, and other information critical to construction projects and stormwater management.

• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. • Nomenclature, symbols, methods, practices, techniques and instruments used in engineering and mapping.

• Surveying equipment, principles, problems, techniques and practices. • Mathematics, including algebra and geometry. • Construction equipment, materials and methods.

Candidates will be evaluated based on their education and experience.

Depending on qualifications, this position offers the potential to hire at the Engineering Technician I, II, or III level.

Placement within the appropriate level will determine the responsibilities, compensation, and career path. Candidates hired at the Engineering Technician II or III level may take on additional responsibilities and receive higher compensation, reflecting their expertise.
