Primary Duties

Nature of Work: This is a skilled classification level to perform general maintenance, repair, and construction activities in buildings, facilities and grounds in any one or more of the following areas: automotive, carpentry, electrical, energy operations, grounds, HVAC, painting, plumbing or related disciplines. Work requires some independent judgment and decision making skills in routine matters to determine proper work methods, time and materials required for each project. Work requires initiative, the ability to self-direct work and problem solve. Work requires the ability to inspect and diagnose the general nature of problems. Work may also include general custodial tasks and may require the use of specialized equipment. Work must be performed in accordance with all applicable building codes, departmental policies, procedures and protocols. Work environments will consist of indoor, outdoor, independent work or as a part of a team. General supervision and oversight is provided to employees in this classification.

Examples of Work Performed:

  • Pick up trash and debris around campus daily.
  • Skilled maintenance of grounds equipment, including diagnostic trouble shooting, ordering parts, repairs, and electronic record keeping.
  • Skilled operation of grounds maintenance equipment, including zero turn mowers, utility vehicles, utility work machines, and tractors.
  • Perform skilled field painting operations, including knowledge of field layouts, and field painter operation, service and cleanup.
  • Perform skilled turf maintenance operations, including mowing, trimming, aerating, seeding, fertilizing, irrigation system repairs, and applying pesticides.
  • Perform skilled landscape maintenance, including bed construction, growing plants in the greenhouse, planting, and shrub trimming.
  • Perform skilled arboriculture operations, including tree planting, pruning, and removals.
  • Perform skilled snow removal and deicing operations using blades, buckets, blowers and sanders. Report areas of safety concerns during snow removal and deicing operations.
  • Perform skilled sidewalk and street repair operations, including flat work concrete, patching, and crack tarring.
  • Support graduation ceremonies and other special events, including setup and teardown.
  • Perform snow removal and deicing operations at non-routine times, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required Qualifications:

  • Employee must possess a valid driver’s license; be able to operate a computer and small equipment; graduation from High School or equivalent; and, a minimum of two years previous experience in maintenance, repair or construction activities in an area of automotive, carpentry, electrical, energy operations, grounds, HVAC, painting, plumbing or related discipline. (Note: years of “previous experience” shall not be construed as an automatic prompt or cause for reclassification.)
  • Employee must be able to work in extreme hot and cold conditions, bend, crouch, climb ladders, and assist in safe lifting in excess of 75 pounds.

License and Certifications Requirements:

  • Acquire and maintain Pesticide Certification (Category 4, Turf and Ornamental)

Other Requirements: Criminal Background and DMV Check; valid Drivers License

 

 

 

 


Compensation Details

Competitive, commensurate with qualifications & experience. Attractive & comprehensive fringe benefit package. Minimum annual salary range is $36,845.

HEALTH AND DENTAL

Coverage through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska with two options: a Preferred Provider Plan (PPO) with a $650 deductible

or a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with a $3,800 deductible.

• Preferred Provider (PPO) = $650.00 deductible, co-insurance 80/20, out of pocket maximum is $4,600. Co-pays are

$35 for primary physician, $55 for specialty physician or urgent care, $85 for ER visits. This plan includes a prescription

discount.

• High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) = $3,800.00 deductible, co-insurance 90/10, out of pocket maximum is $4,350.

Health Reimbursement Account funded by WSC for out of pocket expenses.

• Dental Plan includes two oral exams/cleanings each calendar year with no deductible. Any restorative or maintenance

services cost a $25 deductible per year.

 

VISION

Coverage through Ameritas-VSP; $20 deductible for an annual exam; coverage includes specified maximums for lenses and

frames and a discount on contacts.

 

LIFE INSURANCE

All full time employees receive a term life plan with a death benefit of $30,000. Optional supplemental coverage is available.

 

RETIREMENT

Voluntary contributions are available for full time employees. Once employees meet the minimum age requirements,

employees will contribute 6% of gross salary on a pre-tax basis and WSC contributes 8%. Employees are fully vested from the

first date of contributions. Employees may contribute up to what law allows each year.

 

PAID LEAVE PROGRAMS

Full time employees receive sick leave, vacation leave, 6 days of bereavement leave, and 13 paid holidays.
