Primary Duties

Under the direction of the Water and Sewer Director, performs preventive maintenance, construction and repair work on the Water Distribution and Sewer Collection Systems and responds to questions and concerns of the public. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS • Performs service calls, which include service on and offs, final readings, checks for remote or meter stops, and obtains meter readings; • Complete water service turns on, disconnects and complete water shut-off; • Performs semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance, construction and repair of water distribution and sanitary sewer collection systems; • Operates and uses a variety of equipment and machinery in the construction and maintenance of water and sewer lines including loaders, excavator, tapping machines, dump trucks, and pumps; • Maintains various types of tools and equipment; • Responds to service calls concerning water and sewer emergencies; • Assists in the restoration of property at the conclusion of work completed; • Installs meters and remotes and investigates complaints from the public; • Provides locates of water, sewer and fiber utilities; • Inspect and performs water taps; • Replaces water valves; • Inspects, repairs and replaces fire hydrants; • Assist in the annual hydrant flushing program; • Repairs broken water and sewer mains; • Operates sewer cleaning equipment; • Assists with repairs to sewer lift stations; • Assists in curb stop repairs and or replacement; • Participates in on-call rotation; • Performs weekly water samples; and • Performs other duties as required. 


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: • Modern construction techniques and practices. • Basic plumbing practices and procedures. • Basic electrical troubleshooting skills. • Mechanical abilities to perform the needed work. • Various parts, supplies and materials commonly used in maintenance. • Operational characteristics of equipment and machinery used in water line construction and maintenance. • Principles of safe work practices. Ability to: • Install and repair meter systems and devices. • Operate and maintain all equipment and machinery used in the construction and maintenance of water distribution and sewer collection systems. • Use judgment in determining safety needs and prepares and barricades around work zones. • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. • Work in adverse weather conditions. • Obtain a Grade IV Nebraska Water Operators Certificate; • Establish and maintain effective working relationship with those contacted in the course of work. TRAINING, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS Graduation from high school or equivalent and any combination of training and/or experience that can be demonstrated to result in the possession of the desired knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform the duties of this position. Must possess a Nebraska Driver’s License; Nebraska Class “B” CDL, a Grade 4 Nebraska Water Operator’s Certificate. 


Compensation Details

 Monthly salary range is $4,046 - $5,544.
