Primary Duties

Under direction of the Street Shop Supervisor performs minor and major mechanical repairs to gasoline and diesel powered automotive, heavy construction and other power-driven vehicles and equipment; participates in a preventive maintenance program for City vehicles and equipment. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS • Inspect, diagnose, and performs major and minor mechanical and electrical repairs on automobiles, recreational vehicles, gasoline and diesel-powered trucks/engines, and a variety of heavy and light equipment used in various work settings around the city. • Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment; test drives and operates all vehicles and/or equipment to diagnose and ensure work/repair has been completed. • Repairs, installs, modifies, and troubleshoots hydraulic systems. • Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs computerized electrical, air-conditioning, exhaust, ignition systems, cooling systems, and mechanical systems, in every area of equipment and vehicles. • Performs regular maintenance and repairs on automatic and manual transmissions, differentials, and clutches. • Replaces flywheels, drivetrains, U-joints, wheel oil seals, kingpins, hoses, and any and all parts necessary on vehicles as required. • Install all parts, equipment, and other items as needed. • Repair, adjust and replace brake systems including disc, hydraulic and air brakes. • Installs and repairs replace lighting, two-way radios, emergency/warning equipment, and other miscellaneous equipment on police cars, fire, and city equipment. • Weld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment for City automotive and heavy equipment. • Performs repairs by welding, cutting and metal fabrication by using ARC, MIG, TIG, brazing and oxyacetylene torches and basic machine shop tools and equipment. • Troubleshoot difficult repair problems and create a fabrication solution. • Maintain inventory of parts, supplies, and tools necessary to perform maintenance and repair on City vehicles and equipment. • Perform general and state inspections and maintenance of City-owned vehicles. • Perform routine maintenance on vehicles including examining, changing, rotating and balancing tires; conduct fluid checks; repair flat tires. • Maintain work, time and material records. • Maintain and clean work area. • Assistance with snow removal operating loader and snow pusher. • Perform related duties as assigned. 


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: • Automotive computer control systems. • Tools, equipment, and procedures used in the overhaul, repair, and adjustment of gas- and dieselpowered vehicles and equipment. • Operation and care of internal combustion engines. • Methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work. • Operation and repair characteristics of a wide variety of City owned vehicles and light and heavy equipment. • Operation and care of internal combustion engines and hydraulic equipment. • Safe work practices. Ability to: • Use a variety of tools and equipment with skill. • Understand and follow oral and written directions. • Perform journey level equipment mechanical work including the troubleshooting of vehicles and equipment for both major and minor repair work. • Work independently in the absence of supervision. • Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs. • Understand and follow oral and written instructions. • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. 


Compensation Details

Salary range $4,231 to $5,803 per month.
