Primary Duties

Under the direction of the Wastewater Plant Supervisor, operates the Wastewater Treatment Plant; assists in plant maintenance work; conducts industrial sampling activities including lab and lab analytical. This position must have a Grade 2 Wastewater license. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS • Performs corrective and preventive maintenance on all wastewater plant equipment, vehicles, grounds and buildings; monitoring and maintaining equipment to meet NDEE standards; • Performs laboratory tests as required; • Operates the belt presses to achieve best cake at least cost which requires monitoring of both chemical and sludge feed rates; • Takes filtrate, sludge samples and pH; • Monitors the system’s SCADA controller; • Evaluates various polymers to establish optimum performance records; maintains proper sludge pH to insure stabilization as required by State and Federal regulations and monitors odor control system; • Interprets instrumentation, trouble shoots and makes adjustments on failed equipment; • Troubleshoots electrical equipment, analyzers, Programmable Logic Controllers; • Sets up samplers and flow meters for industries to collect representative samples for proper billing and revenue; • Monitors and pumps special waste pits and directs proper flow; • Spreads dewatered solids with a high floatation solids applicator truck to designated sludge sites; • Applies solids at an agronomic rate to comply with EPA guidelines; • Monitors sludge levels in primaries, thickeners and holding tank; • Pumps grease and dewaters for proper disposal at landfill; • Takes soil samples; • Designs and fabricates various projects for improved job efficiency; • Responds to call within the time and distance required for this position; • Performs other duties as assigned. 


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: • Procedures for collecting samples • Various permits required by regulatory agencies for plant operations. • Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations. • Maintenance procedures for various instruments. • Wastewater plant operations. • Plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and PLC control system skill. • Ability to understand and enter confine spaces. • Must be able to operate truck, tractor, pay loader, all hand tools, pumps, belt press, welder, control panels, and other related equipment Ability to: • Understand and recognize different treatment processes and potential problems in plant operations. • Conduct process analyses of samples. • Read and interpret various instruments and gauges. • Recognize and troubleshoot problems relative to process control and take necessary corrective action. • Operate a variety of plant machinery, equipment and tools relative to wastewater treatment. • Work within the safety rules and guidelines of the City of Norfolk • Read blueprints and electrical drawings. • Maintain various records, charts and logs. • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. • Establish and maintain effective working relationship with those contacted in the course of work. 


Compensation Details

Salary range is $4,046 – $5,544 per month.
