Primary Duties

DEFINITION Under the direction and supervision of the Library Director, performs a variety of professional library activities, including supervising staff, managing library collections, planning and presenting programming, and providing customer service.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS • Supervises, trains, and evaluates Youth Services Department staff and Summer Pages;

• Selects, organizes, and maintains the Juvenile and Young Adult collections with help from support staff and oversees related displays;

• Plans and presents programs for children, teens, and families;

• Keeps current with principles and practices of modern libraries through professional development activities;

• Stays informed on sources of grant funding and submits grant applications as approved by the Library Director;

• Keeps statistics of department productivity and provides reports as required;

• Provides community outreach including giving presentations to local schools and community groups, providing library tours, and promoting library services;

• Assists patrons in advanced reader’s advisory services;

• Assists patrons at all service desks, including checking materials in and out, organizing returned materials, collecting service charges, registering new patrons, placing holds on materials for patrons, searching for materials, providing reader's advisory, helping patrons with library-related technology questions, and basic reference service;

• Answers telephones and provides assistance with patron questions;

• Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned. 


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

JOB STANDARDS/SKILLS

Requires the minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science, Education, or a related field, Nebraska Public Librarian Certification or the ability to attain such, strong organizational skills, leadership skills to supervise staff, thorough knowledge of principles and practices of public libraries, thorough understanding of computers and accompanying software and applications, knowledge of library collection classification and selection techniques, effective communication skills, public speaking and performance skills to present programs; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the public.  


Compensation Details

Schedule & Compensation: • 40 hours/week (Exempt) • Schedule includes 1 evening per week, every other Saturday, and occasional Sundays • Monthly salary range: $4,629 – $6,348.
