Summary:

The Certified Technician will perform all duties of the General Technician. This will include processing medication orders and patient charges; maintaining an adequate supply of medications and supplies; delivering medications; performing duties of pharmacy clerk or inventory control clerk when necessary; and receiving telephone calls and visitors to the pharmacy. In addition, the Certified Technician will be responsible for Non-Sterile Compounding, Sterile Compounding, and filling Employee/Outpatient Prescriptions if needed during closed hours of The Pill Box. Pharmacy Tech II will have education and training in Hazardous Compounding and will compound these products when needed.

Responsibilities:

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Performs all responsibilities/duties required by the Pharmacy as defined in the scope of practice, to assure that the unique nature of the patient is addressed. This includes but is not limited to the age of the patient served.

2. Understand and applies statutes and regulations of controlled substances. (Minimizes discrepancies in Automated Dispensing Cabinet (ADC), C-II's stored in Narc Vault, etc.)

3. Able to access and use the department computers to access patient profiles, process daily medication fill, retrieve e-mails, create and print labels, information cards, and other function of FRHS Network and Pharmacy Common.

4. Able to process, fill and deliver the daily medication carts in an accurate/timely manner.

5. Able to maintain adequate stock of medications through use of Wholesaler and Materials Management department.

6. Check assigned outdates and process outdated medications. Includes monthly inspection of assigned areas with a manual inspection of all ADC contents twice yearly.

7. Able to perform duties of morning rounds, fill and replace floor stock and automated cabinets.

8. Able to handle outside sales, OTC sales.

9. Knowledgeable about product storage requirements, IV stability and sterility, expirations of compounded items, and manages compounded product to minimize waste.

10. Knowledgeable about the facilities and equipment used in sterile compounding. Including proper use of Sterile Hoods and use of BD IV Prep software to ensure safe and accurate products during sterile compounding.

11. Knows and uses proper Aseptic Technic. Performs Quality Assurance tests as assigned.

12. Knows and applies regulations regarding expiration dates and labeling.

13. Able to perform non-sterile compounding and repackaging.

14. Competent to perform necessary calculations and product identification.

15. Competent to receive, fill and perform other necessary tasks associated with outpatient prescriptions.

16. Knows and follows statutes and regulations regarding outpatient prescription maintenance.

17. Consistently prepares product in a manner that allows pharmacist supervision for process validation.

18. Properly performs duties relating to ADC support for the Surgery and other areas.

19. Keeps controlled substances properly controlled. Reconciles wasting of narcotic substances where needed. Works with staff to resolve discrepancies when needed.

20. Learns and applies ADC software to add/delete product, adjust quantities, run reports for management and documentation, problem solving and education of other users.

21. Performs a cycle count at least twice weekly to ensure accurate inventory levels of all Surgery ADCs.

22. Works with fellow technicians to ensure an inventory and expiration check on all ADCs once monthly. Ensures documentation of such.

23. Accurately fills and maintains inventory levels of Surgery ADC and others as needed.

24. Responds to user crisis within Surgery and other units.

25. Complies with sterility/aseptic techniques required in the Surgery suites.

26. Assists in development and installation of other ADC suppliers when needed.

27. Assists the Pharmacy Buyer with receiving the order, returns, invoices, etc.

28. Properly performs duties relating to Pharmacy Buyer position.

29. Sends a wholesaler order at the end of each shift.

30. Removes expired goods from patient fill areas. Products are then either destroyed or sent via a Return Distributer in a timely manner.

31. Obtains Lovenox Teaching Kits for the med floors when needed.

32. Keep expired narcotics orderly; ensure proper and accurate inventory of items; achieve periodic destruction of narcotics through a return distributor.

33. Utilize the Simplifi 797 website to accurately maintain hood room modifications and outdates along with competency reviews.

34. Oversee and ensure compliance with checking/recording refrigerator/freezer temps; hood cleaning and documents in the Simplifi 797 system.

 

Duties and Responsibilities for the following specialized Tech II:

 

A. Billing technician:

1. Accurately enters manual pharmacy billing charges.

2. Charge adjustments per Coders: research and problem solve as necessary.

3. Audit final payments for high-cost injections in CDU.

4. Balance inpatient cash register.

5. Codes invoices in a timely manner in a way compliant with the needs of the Finance department to maximize payment efficiency.

6. Get and sort mail.

7. Monitor industrial sales and St. Joseph’s IV medication billing.

8. Monitor for and adjust billing on non-formulary medications including patient's own medications in CDU Unit.

9. Reconcile Credit Card usage and provide to Director.

10. Review day-end detail batch; check for accurate billing.

11. Run and disseminate weekly/monthly/quarterly quality and workload reports as directed.

12. Work with Chart Auditor on Insurance audits including billing questions and authorizing changes to patient bills.

13. ADC reconciliation of temporary patients

14. ADC narcotic cycle count on Mondays – document in Simplify monthly.

15. Cash box reconciliation.

16. Approve invoices.

17. Review CDU and wound center charges.

18. Work the High Dollar Work Que, bulk meds administered/charged/waste charging.

19. Report revenue and usage to Director of Pharmacy.

20. Follow up on unreconciled dispense tracking.

21. Remove charges for Invega for inpatient dispenses and record on spreadsheet.

22. Obtain and send consultant RPH hours to appropriate finance member.

23. Genoa/Lynch/Osmond billing.

24. Inpatient and Pill Box exchange billing.

25. Work NDC requests.

26. Check epidural carts and C-Section boxes for stock and expirations.

27. Complete assigned ADC outdate check monthly by pulling three months ahead on outdates and document in Simplifi 797 monthly.

28. Other duties as assigned by Director.

 

B. Automated Dispensing Cabinet Technician:

1. Ensures OR anesthesia ADCs are corrected after discrepancies are corrected.

2. Contact anesthesia provider when additional documentation is necessary.

3. Compares anesthesia paper record to ADCs transactions.

4. Creates automated reports per request such as floor stock, Epogen, and vaccine report.

5. Monitor temperature log and via Prime X – One Vue system.

6. Maintains ADC daily functions and addresses issues that arise, contacting ADC vendor if needed.

7. Reconciles and wastes all surgery area-controlled product.

8. Complete assigned ADC outdate check monthly by pulling three months ahead on outdates and document in Simplifi 797 monthly.

9. Maintains 95% of patient medications in the omni to minimize central Cartfill and maximize Cartless system by utilizing the Knowledge Portal in BD.

10. Ensures employees have access to the ADC and are set up with correct roles.

11. Superuser for Healthsite Inventory Optimization.

12. Super user for CII Safe.

13. Monitors frequency in med order so that it appears on scheduled med tab for the nurse.

14. Ensures and trains new staff members on how to utilize the ADC system.

15. Anesthesia audit:

  • Counts ADCs.
  • Compares anesthesia Epic records to ADC transactions.
  • Contacts anesthesia provider if additional documentation is necessary.
  • Ensures OR anesthesia ADCs are corrected after discrepancies are corrected.

 

C. Clinical Technician

1. Assist Clinical RPh in daily activities on the floor.

2. Obtain medication history from patients.

3. Phone physician, pharmacies, family members to reconcile any issues with home medications.

4. Enter home medication profile into the EMR.

5. Organize daily workflow to assist RPH with patient discharges and admits.

6. Calculate LACE score on patients to assist RPh on knowing which patients to contact after discharge.

7. Re-label bulk medications that are to go home with the patient.


Hours will be dependent on patient census and workload. Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, to include after-hours and weekends as necessary.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Job Requirements: The requirements listed below must be representative of the knowledge, skills, minimum education, training, licensure, experience, and/or ability required.

EDUCATION:

GED or High School Diploma required.

EXPERIENCE:

Previous healthcare experience preferred.

SKILLS:

Language Skills – Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language required.

Other Certifications/Requirements:

Must be 18 years of age to apply.

Current Pharmacy Technician license from the State of Nebraska required.

Certified Pharmacy Tech (CPhT) obtained through an accredited program OR obtained through Pharmacy Technician certification Board (PTCB) exam required.
