Primary Duties

The Recreation Coordinator participates in a variety of needs and mission-based activities appropriate for the community. Reporting to the Assistant Director - Recreation, the coordinator administers prescribed programs, services, facilities, events, and online registration. This includes planning, promoting, implementing, and organizing a variety of recreation programs. Assists in the hiring of recreation staff, instructors, and makes necessary recommendations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Plans, implements, and organizes a variety of programs, facilities and services associated with recreation activities and classes, community events, leagues, camps, and day trips.

• Promotes and publicizes recreational programs and events;

• Develops, and implements staff schedules, assignments, recommendations for disciplinary action and evaluates performance regularly; • Organizes and implements training for seasonal recreation staff; • Initiates thorough communication of program information to participants; • Responds to public inquiries, concerns, and complaints in a timely manner;

• Assists with monitoring and editing registration information through the recreation software system;

• Upholds the agency’s internal and external customer service standards;

• Enforces program, park and facility rules and regulations and complies with safety standards associated with risk management;

• Acts as a recreation liaison with different community groups as assigned;

• Assists with securing funding and resources for programs and events through community partnerships and sponsorships;

• Participates in annual budget preparation and submits requests to the Assistant Director – Recreation; • Administers business functions and ensures proper operations following department policies and procedures;

• May require working nights, weekends, and some holidays;

• Secure and schedule athletic fields, parks, any/all locations needed for recreation programming and events;

• Ensures that all forms have been submitted for approval to the city with set deadlines;

• Determine program fees meet cost recovery goals set by the Assistant Director – Recreation;

• Administers and reviews post program evaluations to the public and staff;

• Assists with concessions and ice rink operations as needed; • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

  


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: • Department policies and procedures; • Recreation equipment, and athletic programs, safety practices and public relations; • Computer software use, and applications associated with programming; • Experience in Microsoft Office applications; • Basic marketing approaches to recreation programming; • Leadership skills with support staff and instructors; • Manage a budget; • Program development implementation and evaluation principles and methods; • Program area supervised; • Industry trends related to specific program areas;

Ability to: • Plan, create, implement, evaluate programs and events; • Use registration and reservation software; • Carry out written and verbal instructions; • Maintain good working relationships with the general public; • Skills in the use of recreation and athletic equipment; • Skills to write and prepare brochures and media releases; • Manage and prioritize workload;

TRAINING, EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in recreation or a related field, or a minimum of two years of progressive work experience in the park and recreation industry and at least one year of recreation program experience preferred. A valid state driver’s license is required. Certification in CPR, First Aid and AED within three months of employment.


Compensation Details

Salary range $4,337 – $5,948 per month
