Primary Duties

Under direction of the Public Works Director/City Engineer, performs technical and supervisory work relat­ing to the activities of the Engineering Division; assists in the engineering activities of several divisions, including Street, Park, Water, Sewer, Solid Waste and Water Pollution Control.




·       Confers with and advises other City staff on problems related to the design, con­struction, maintenance and operation of public works structures, grounds and facilities;

·       Participates in the design of street improvement districts, sewer extension districts and other municipal public works projects;

·       Supervises the design of street paving, water and sewer main installation, storm sewer construction projects and park improvements;

·       Per­forms design work and reviews design work done by consultants; solves engineering and techni­cal problems as required;

·       Makes field inspections to ensure proper quality and quantity of work;

·       Ensures adherence to safety standards;

·       Works with other divisions reviewing subdivisions for engineering features;

·       Makes recommendations concerning pub­lic works projects;

·       Prepares and administers the engineering budget;

·       Prepares staff reports and various other written materials related to the job;

·       Serves as lead engineer for assigned project development;

·       Ensures that projects are scheduled and completed; commits resources to accomplish goals and objectives;

·       Prepares or contributes to grant proposals for construction projects and oversees administration of grant funds;

·       Coordinates and assists in development of design standards, standard specifications, permitting procedures and standards relevant to the Engineering Division;

·       Prepares complex staff reports and research on Engineering Division related topics;

·       Prepares and presents information and reports in both verbal and written format to the City Council, City Management, other agencies or the public as assigned;

·       Performs other relat­ed duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



·        Must have a four-year degree in Civil Engineering.

·        Four years of progressively responsible experience in the field of Civil Engineering.  Experience may be in water resources, environmental, transportation, project management, or municipal and state government.

·        Must have or be eligible for a Professional Engineer License.

·        Nebraska Professional Engineer Registration required within one year.

·        Knowledge of principles and practices of management.

·        Knowledge of various construction methods and procedures; and pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.

·       Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

·       Ability to solve problems and work independently with minimal supervision and under tight deadlines.

·       Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and other individuals involved in the day-to-day activities of the City.




Compensation Details

Salary range $5,457 - $7,607 per month.
